have you chack if you HDD is near the death ?

Read Only are one of the sign that the HDD is near the death.

thank you for your response

It seems that the disk were already mounted however for some reason they were in READ ONLY
Partitions were mounted in folders

/mountsda1
/mountsda2
etc

We had to fix this by doing the following (or similar)

mount -o remount,rw /mountsda1/

Yes, of course.
When you boot in rescue mode, its like your PC booting from a Windows-install-CD instead of your hardrive.
Your "C:" isn't your hard drive, but your CD !!!!
So, your / (root) and (example) everything you find in /etc/.... isn't your harddisk, but the rescue boot drive !! (whch is not a real physical harddrive !)

This is why you should "mount" your hard drive (mount all your partitions !) first.

Then, in /mnt/ you will fnd your root directory structure - and (example) in /mnt/etc/ you will find your /etc directory which is on your hard disk.

Hi

We had to restart the server in RESCUE MODE in order to access the files on the server

HOWEVER

> When we try to EDIT some files (configuration files) (ifcfg-eth0 etc etc) we get error that we cannot SAVE it and that is read only

We tried all sort of combinations with SU, SUDO, :w! but nothing works

Any suggestions?
